SUMMARY:An Evening of the Soul: Schubert’s Winterreise
DESCRIPTION:Please note: there has been a change to this concert’s program. The planned premiere of Andrew Goodwin’s new choral compositions — originally conceived as An Evening of the Soul\, a musical offering of light\, hope\, and peace — has been postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. \nIn its place\, we are honoured to present a program that continues the same spirit of reflection and illumination: Franz Schubert’s Winterreise (Op. 89\, D. 911)\, performed by Andrew Goodwin (tenor) and Daniel de Borah (piano). \nOne of the most profound works ever written for voice and piano\, Winterreise traces a journey through solitude\, memory\, and renewal — a timeless meditation on the resilience of the human spirit and the light that endures through darkness. \nThe concert will open with one of Andrew Goodwin’s own compositions for piano and cello\, preserving a thread from the original program’s conception. This special evening invites audiences to share in an experience of beauty\, contemplation\, and renewal — a journey inward\, where music reveals its quiet\, transformative light. This performance is dedicated to Judith Neilson\, whose generosity\, vision\, and lifelong devotion to the arts have profoundly shaped Australia’s cultural landscape. On the occasion of her jubilee\, we honour her extraordinary contribution to the life of the arts and her enduring belief in their power to inspire\, to console\, and to illuminate the human spirit.

SUMMARY:Andrew Goodwin & Young Kwon Choi: A Poet's Love
DESCRIPTION:Join tenor Andrew Goodwin and pianist Young Kwon Choi for a deeply moving recital of Romantic song spanning German Lieder and Russian Romance. The program opens with Robert Schumann’s masterpiece Dichterliebe\, a cycle of sixteen songs set to Heinrich Heine’s poetry. With Dichterliebe\, Schumann traces the arc of ecstatic love\, betrayal\, and resigned sorrow with unparalleled psychological insight and melodic beauty. \nFollowing the interval\, four early songs by Gustav Mahler from Lieder und Gesänge aus der Jugendzeit offer a youthful counterpoint. Settings of poems by Richard Leander (Frühlingsmorgen and Erinnerung) and Molina (Serenade and Phantasie from Don Juan) evoke spring’s renewal\, tender memory\, and romantic fantasy in Mahler’s fresh\, imaginative style. \nThe evening concludes with seven of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s most cherished romances. From the gentle awakening of spring and the excitement of the ballroom to the quiet pain of loneliness and heartfelt pleas\, these Russian songs display Tchaikovsky’s gift for lyrical melody and profound emotional expression. Together\, the works create a powerful dialogue between two great Romantic traditions. \nGet your tickets now > \n  \nPROGRAM \nROBERT SCHUMANN Dichterliebe Op. 48 \nGUSTAV MAHLER Selections from Lieder und Gesänge aus der Jugendzeit: \n1. SUMMARY:An Evening of Compositions by Andrew Goodwin
DESCRIPTION:For one evening only\, internationally acclaimed Australian tenor and composer Andrew Goodwin brings together an exceptional group of musicians for a concert of his own music in the beautiful and intimate setting of Barker College’s War Memorial Chapel. \nAndrew’s distinguished career as a tenor has taken him to some of the world’s great stages\, including La Scala\, the Bolshoi Theatre\, Teatro Real\, the Liceu and Opera Australia\, and into performances with leading orchestras and musicians in Australia and internationally. \nAlongside his celebrated performing career\, Andrew has become an established and increasingly recognised composer\, creating music that is deeply expressive\, lyrical and profoundly connected to the voice. This concert offers a rare opportunity to experience these two sides of his musical life together: Andrew Goodwin the performer and Andrew Goodwin the composer. \nFor this special occasion\, Andrew will be joined by world-class professional musicians\, singers and members of the Barker musical community in a programme ranging from the intimacy of song and string quartet to the richness of choir and organ. The evening will include several world premieres\, offering the remarkable experience of hearing new works brought to life for the very first time. \nAmong the works performed will be Andrew’s Songs of War\, a moving song cycle setting poetry shaped by war\, remembrance\, loss and humanity. Its performance within the War Memorial Chapel gives the work a particular resonance\, while the wider programme reaches far beyond this theme\, celebrating the beauty and emotional breadth of contemporary classical music. \nThe evening will culminate in a newly commissioned Requiem for choir and organ. \nThere is something particularly special about hearing new music in this way: the composer present\, extraordinary musicians gathered to perform his work\, new compositions receiving their first performances\, and the intimacy and acoustic of the Chapel becoming part of the experience. \nThis will be a rare musical occasion — and one unlikely to be experienced in quite the same way again. \nFree admission — RSVP essential\nWe are delighted to make this exceptional concert available free of charge\, giving our community the opportunity to experience world-class musicians and newly composed classical music without the barrier of a ticket price. \nPlaces are limited and advance registration is essential. RSVPs close Friday 16 October 2026. \nRSVP / Reserve your place here: \nThere is no obligation to contribute. However\, presenting a concert of this calibre carries significant costs\, particularly in bringing together the professional musicians who will perform Andrew’s works. \nFor those who are able and would like to support the evening\, donations would be very warmly appreciated and will help us meet some of these costs. Donations can be made online through the website or in cash at the door. \nWhether or not you choose to donate\, we very much hope you will join us for this extraordinary evening of music! \nParking: Rosewood Centre CarparkEnquiries: events@barker.nsw.edu.au
